Tempi verbali
- Present simple per abitudini e fatti: "I go to work by car every day", "He meets his friends on weekends" (terza persona con -s), "Does he do his homework?". Il present continuous per ciò che accade ora (right now, at the moment: "I am studying") e per i programmi futuri già fissati ("The taxi is picking me up at seven tomorrow").
- Past simple per azioni concluse (last week, yesterday, ago): "She left twenty minutes ago". I verbi irregolari ricorrono spesso: break/broke, shoot/shot, fly/flew, freeze/froze, teach/taught, tell/told, take/took. Il past continuous ("What were you doing at nine?") si traduce con "stavo/stavamo + gerundio", interrotto da un past simple ("While he was going to the post office, he met his sister").
- Past perfect (had + participio) per l'azione anteriore a un'altra passata, segnalata da before: "She had listened to the music before she fell asleep", "He had stood in the queue for an hour before the shop opened", "She remembered that she had forgotten her bag".
